Writing Home Depot product content means writing for two readers at once. The first is a review process that checks every title, bullet and attribute against a Data Standard for your category. The second is a shopper searching for a specific part or tool who will leave the moment a page feels vague.
Most suppliers write for the second reader and get stopped by the first. This article shows how to satisfy both, with before-and-after examples and a practical way to triage a catalog too large to fix at once.
What Home Depot Product Content Actually Has to Do
Home Depot’s IDM guide is clear on the basics. The product name must follow the category’s Data Standard formula and must not include the brand name. Marketing copy needs to be at least three sentences and stay within the character limit. Bullets must meet the number the category requires, and category-specific attributes need to be complete.
Field | Rule | How it fails |
Product name | Follow the Data Standard formula. No brand name. | Brand and promotional words added to the title. |
Marketing copy | At least three sentences, within the character limit. | One long sentence or a copy-pasted manufacturer paragraph. |
Bullets | Meet the category’s required count. | Three bullets where the category needs more. |
Attributes | Complete every category-specific field. | Blank size, finish or compatibility fields. |
Before and After: Rewriting a Weak Listing
The examples below are illustrative. Your category’s Data Standard decides the exact order and wording, but the pattern holds across categories.
The Title
- Before: Acme Pro Series 18V Best Cordless Drill Fast Shipping
- After: 18V Cordless Drill Driver Kit with 2 Batteries and Charger
The brand has gone, the promotional words have gone, and the title now tells a searcher the voltage, the tool type and what is in the box.
The Description
A weak description repeats the title. A useful one answers the buyer’s next three questions: what is it for, what makes it suitable, and what should I know before I install or use it. Three clear sentences that do that will outperform a long paragraph of marketing language, and they also meet the minimum sentence requirement.
The Bullets
Lead each bullet with the benefit or the fact a buyer needs, such as the battery platform, the torque or the compatible sizes, and keep each one to a single idea. Bullets that read like a spec sheet convert better than bullets that read like an advertisement.
Attributes: The Fields Shoppers Filter By
A large share of Home Depot browsing starts with filters, not search. Shoppers narrow by size, finish, voltage, material or brand. An item with blank attributes is invisible to anyone who filters on them, however good the copy is.
- Fill every category-specific attribute, even the ones that feel obvious.
- Use the exact values the category lists, not your own variations.
- Keep attribute values consistent with the title and the packaging.
How to Triage a Catalog of 2,000 SKUs
Rewriting everything at once rarely works. A phased plan gets the biggest gains first.
- Rank by revenue. In many catalogs around a fifth of the SKUs drive most of the sales, so about 400 SKUs out of 2,000 deserve attention first.
- Flag rejection risks. Any item with a branded title, thin bullets or blank attributes goes to the front of the queue.
- Set a weekly rhythm. Rewriting 100 SKUs a week clears the priority 400 in four weeks, and the full catalog in about five months.
- Measure and repeat. Track conversion and content scores weekly and move to the next tier.
Common QC Rejections in Content and How to Fix Them
Rejection | What it usually means | Fix |
Product name non-compliance | The title has the brand name, a promotional phrase or the wrong order. | Rebuild the name from the category formula. |
Insufficient copy | Fewer than three sentences, or over the character limit. | Rewrite into three clear sentences and check the count. |
Too few bullets | The category requires more bullets than provided. | Add specific, factual bullets until the count is met. |
Missing attribute | A category-specific field is blank. | Fill it from the product specification, not from memory. |
Three Product Types, Three Content Patterns
A Fastener Pack
Buyers want exact facts: material, size, thread, finish and count. A title such as “Stainless Steel Hex Bolts, 3/8 in. x 2 in., 25 Pack” tells a buyer everything in one line, and the bullets can add the grade, corrosion resistance and recommended use.
A Kitchen Faucet
Installation details decide the purchase. State the number of holes, finish, spout height and reach, and whether a deck plate is included. Add a bullet on whether it works with a standard sink so a homeowner does not have to guess.
A Flooring Product
Coverage and compatibility lead. Give the square footage per carton, plank dimensions, thickness, wear layer and the type of subfloor it suits. Buyers need to order the right quantity the first time, so help them do the arithmetic.

- Rewriting at scale: titles, bullets and descriptions written to the category formula, with SEO principles from our SEO tips for e-commerce sellers.
- Attribute gap filling: blank and inconsistent attributes identified and completed.
- Prioritized rollout: revenue-first batches, so the first fixes matter most.
